Rotokauri Hill Top House

About

Perched on a hilltop near Lake Rotokauri, this stunning new home offers expansive views of Waikato landmarks such as Te Aroha, Taupiri, the Hakarimata range, and Pirongia.

The house is clad in stained cedar, providing a warm and textured aesthetic. Hollow slatted-timber columns diffuse sunlight during the day and create a radiant basket effect at night, dispersing warm light across the landscape. Cedar is skillfully used throughout, with slatted screens around the columns adding both structural transparency and a unique light display that enhances the garden's nighttime ambiance.

The home was specifically designed by the Architect to allude to a kite, with the primary “Kite form’ accommodating the main living areas and bedrooms, and a secondary guest wing - the “kite tail” - separated by a grassed courtyard.

Sustainability

We worked closely with the home owners to select materials that minimised the carbon footprint of the building, incorporating in-slab heating, solar-water heating, worm-farm wastewater treatment and heavy insulation. The exceptional design allows guests to have privacy and their own series of views across the hillside to the lake, and features a radiate pine Rame and structure, avoiding structural steelwork and recognising pine as a local and renewable resource.
